Milk thistle alters thyroid hormone transport

Milk thistle (also known as silybum marianum) is plant in the Asteraceae family. Milk thistle is widely promoted as a liver supplement. It is sometimes sold as “Silymarin” or “Chardon-Marie” (derived from carduus marianus). On the internet, many websites and blogs are proclaiming that milk thistle can support thyroid hormone health simply by means of promoting liver health. Milk thistle extract is selling like hot cakes! However, in light of recent scientific discovery, caution — and hope! — is needed with regard to milk thistle’s downstream effects on thyroid hormone metabolism and signaling. TBAb hypothyroidism diagnosed in a mother and baby

In this post, I’d like to share with you a real-life story, suitable for the holiday season, that might warm your hearts as much as it warmed mine. And by the end, it might even motivate you to learn more or take action. Newsflash from 2016: A newborn baby’s hypothyroidism with a TSH of 117 mcIU/mL was properly diagnosed and was successfully treated. But it only happened because of a series of fortunate events! My body composition before and during thyroid therapy

This post is a brief outline of my physical “Thyroid Therapy Transformation,” a glimpse into my personal life and how symptoms and body composition changed in response to changes in thyroid therapy and diet. New Zealand thyroid patients’ petition milestones achieved

See the petition online: “Help NZ Thyroid Patients Get Treatment That Works.” This petition ran for a year. This is how the TANZi website described the situation in New Zealand: “It is difficult for patients with symptoms of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism to find a NZ doctor or …

A complete pathway map of T4 and T3 metabolism and clearance

Biochemical pathway maps are an important aspect of medical education and medical problem-solving. They help us to view a network or series of chemical reactions in cells. In this article, I present a comprehensive science-based pathway map showing all the major pathways of both T4 and T3 hormone metabolism, also including their urinary clearance. I also offer a secondary pathway map zooming in on T3 metabolism and clearance alone, which is meant to be an appendix or companion to the more T4-centric map featuring both hormones. If you find this article too complex and scientific for your taste, I recommend …
